Cuban MAGA Voters Excited to Live in Dictatorship They Fled

The streets of Miami-Dade County in Southeast Florida have been buzzing with euphoria as Cuban-American MAGA supporters celebrate the rise of Trump’s authoritarian regime. Many Cuban Americans in this area have long harbored a deep affiliation for Fidel Castro’s dictatorship, and lovingly recall memories of growing up in the grip of a megalomaniac strongman.

“It’s like coming home again,” said Alejandro Pérez, a 71-year-old bicycle shop owner in the La Saguera region of Miami, Florida. “When my father dragged me out of bed in the middle of night to escape to America on a fishing boat, I never got closure with my roots in Cuba. I never got to say goodbye to Fidel Castro’s authoritarian regime—which has always been part of my soul. I feel like my life has finally come full circle.”

A 2024 Florida International University research poll revealed that a staggering 68% of Cuban American voters cast their ballots for Donald Trump. When Democrats ran on policies such as universal healthcare and more funding for public education, Cuban American MAGA supporters reacted in disgust and flocked toward Donald Trump’s promises to destroy democracy, end the rule of law, and undermine the U.S. economy. As President Trump continues to weaponize the judicial system, rig financial markets, and deploy military forces against U.S. citizens, Cuban American MAGA voters feel their families are finally home again.

“President Trump feels like part of mi familia,” explained Lola Fernández, a retired high school history teacher in the Hialeah neighborhood of Miami. “His presidency reminds me of the goon squad that murdered my grandmother in Havana for reading a banned book about yoga. We need a leader with machismo like Trump. He says what he means and isn’t afraid to kill people in the name of Jesus. You know, most Americans don’t remember the horrible Cuban Missile Crisis, but I do. That won’t happen under President Trump’s rule because now we’re allies with Russia. It makes me proud of my Cuban heritage.”
